A Family Favorite Story

When I was little, my grandmother’s apple pie was the highlight of every family gathering. She’d let me help peel the apples, sneaking slices into my mouth while we worked. The aroma of her pie baking in the oven was like a warm hug, and I’ll never forget how proud I felt when she let me roll out the dough.

Now, I carry on her tradition, baking this pie for my own family. My kids love to help arrange the apples and crimp the edges of the crust. It’s more than just a recipe—it’s a piece of our family history that brings us together every time I make it.

Description

There’s nothing quite like a slice of Classic Homemade Apple Pie, with its perfectly flaky crust and tender, spiced apple filling.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Crust:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and diced
  • 68 tbsp ice water

For the Filling:

  • 67 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For Assembly:

  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tbsp sugar, for sprinkling

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and sugar. Cut in the cold butter with a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Gradually add ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough just comes together. Divide into two disks, wrap in plastic, and chill for at least 1 hour.

2. Make the Filling

  • Peel, core, and slice the apples into 1/4-inch slices. Toss them with sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, lemon juice, and vanilla extract. Let sit for 15 minutes.

3. Assemble the Pie

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out one disk of dough on a floured surface and fit it into a 9-inch pie dish. Add the apple filling, mounding it slightly in the center.
  • Roll out the second disk of dough and place it over the filling. Trim, seal, and crimp the edges. Cut small slits in the top to vent. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with sugar.

4. Bake

  • Place the pie on a baking sheet to catch any drips. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbling.

5. Cool and Serve

  • Let the pie cool for at least 2 hours to allow the filling to set. Serve warm or at room temperature with ice cream or whipped cream.
