Description

Let’s talk about the magic of chocolate. There’s something almost hypnotic about the way warm, gooey chocolate pudding seeps into a soft, fudgy cake. It’s like two desserts in one—a rich, velvety pudding on the bottom and a soft, brownie-like cake on top.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Fudge Sauce:

  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ¼ cups hot water

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Cake Batter

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8×8-inch baking dish.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Stir in milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until you have a smooth batter.
  4. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish.

Step 2: Make the Fudge Layer

  1. In a small bowl, mix together brown sugar and cocoa powder.
  2. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the cake batter.

Step 3: The Magic Step

  1. Carefully pour hot water over the entire mixture—DO NOT stir! This step creates the self-saucing effect.

Step 4: Bake and Serve

  1. Bake for 35-40 minutes, until the top is firm but the bottom is still gooey.
  2. Let it rest for 5 minutes, then scoop into bowls, making sure to get plenty of that hot fudge sauce from the bottom.
  3. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
