Who’s ready to get spooky in the kitchen? These Spider Halloween Cupcakes are the perfect treat to bring a bit of creepy fun to your Halloween festivities.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Cupcakes:
    • 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 cup granulated sugar
    • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • ½ teaspoon baking powder
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • 1 large egg
    • ½ cup vegetable oil
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Frosting:
    • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 2 cups powdered sugar
    • 23 tablespoons milk
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • Black food coloring (optional)
  • Spider Decorations:
    • Mini chocolate sandwich cookies (for the spider body)
    • Chocolate chips or candy eyes
    • Black licorice (for spider legs)
    • Sprinkles, candy corn, or other Halloween candies for extra decoration

Instructions

Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lining a cupcake tin with 12 cupcake liners.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, oil, vanilla extract, and buttermilk. Slowly combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients, mixing until smooth.

Fill each cupcake liner about ¾ of the way full with batter and bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cupcakes cool completely before frosting.

For the frosting, beat the softened butter until smooth. Gradually add the powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, alternating with milk, until you reach your desired consistency. Add vanilla extract and black food coloring if you want a spooky, dark frosting.

Once the cupcakes are frosted, it’s time to decorate! Use a mini chocolate sandwich cookie for the spider body, chocolate chips or candy eyes for the eyes, and black licorice strands for the legs. Get creative with sprinkles and candy to make your spiders extra spooky!
