Description

There’s something magical about a red velvet cake. With its striking red hue and velvety crumb, it’s an elegant centerpiece for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 12 tbsp red food coloring

For the Cream Cheese Filling:

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Chocolate Glaze:

  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 4 oz semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter

Instructions

  • Prepare the Cake Batter:
    • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
    • Sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl.
    • In a large bowl, beat sugar and oil until smooth. Add eggs, one at a time, then mix in buttermilk, vanilla, vinegar, and food coloring.
    • Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture. Mix until just combined.
  • Bake the Cake Layers:
    • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
    • Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Make the Cream Cheese Filling:
    • Beat cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla until smooth and creamy.
  • Assemble the Cake:
    • Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread the cream cheese filling evenly over the top.
    • Place the second cake layer on top and gently press down.
  • Prepare the Chocolate Glaze:
    • Heat heavy cream in a small saucepan until it just begins to simmer. Remove from heat and pour over the chopped chocolate. Let sit for 2 minutes, then stir until smooth. Mix in butter for extra shine.
  • Glaze the Cake:
    • Pour the chocolate glaze over the cake, letting it drip down the sides for a dramatic effect.
